Mrs. Naomi V. (Kaiser) Grieve Ness, 83, a resident of Bossler Hall of Quincy United Methodist Home, Quincy, PA, and formerly of Mont Alto, PA, died at 11:05 P.M., Friday, January 4, 2002 in the Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro, PA. Her death followed a short illness.
Born December 27, 1918 near Newville, PA, she was the daughter of the late Harry A. and Emma May (Wingerd) Kaiser. She lived her early life in Newville, PA before moving to Franklin County, PA as a child.
Mrs. Ness attended schools in the Chambersburg School District, Chambersburg, PA.
She and her first husband, Mr. Victor L. Grieve, were married June 10, 1939 in Manor, PA. He died July 5, 1969. She and her second husband, the Rev. Dr. John H. “Jack” Ness, were married December 14, 1973 in Mont Alto, PA. The couple moved back to Mont Alto, following Rev. Ness’s retirement and then to Quincy Village, Quincy, PA, in 1995. Rev. Ness died September 18, 2000. She moved to Bossler Hall at the Quincy United Methodist Home, Quincy, PA, in November 2000.
Mrs. Ness was a homemaker.
Mrs. Ness was a member of the Fetterhoff Chapel United Brethren Church at the age of twelve. After moving to Mont Alto, PA, at the age of 16, she became a member of the United Brethren Church, presently called Otterbein United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir, served on various committees and held numerous offices within the church. She also served as Lay Representative for the church to Annual Conference and served as a member on the board of Pensions for the United Methodist Church in the Central Pennsylvania Conference.
Mrs. Ness also served as a Girl Scout Leader and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She enjoyed sewing, gardening, fishing, hunting, and refinishing furniture.
She is survived by one daughter, Donna G. Russell of Towson, MD; one son, Robert J. Grieve of Mont Alto, PA; one step-daughter, June Garritano of East Stroudsburg, PA; two step-sons, John H. Ness of Dayton, OH, and Harry Ness of Richmond, VA; three grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harry L. Kaiser and C. Wallace “Wally” Kaiser, both of Chambersburg, PA; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and two husbands, she was preceded in death by three sisters, infant Stella Kaiser, Mary Henry, and Cleo Smith; and three brothers, Lawrence Kaiser, Eugene Kaiser, and Paul Kaiser, Sr.
Services will be held at 12:00 Noon, Tuesday, January 8, 2002 in the Otterbein United Methodist Church, 9 Park Street, Mont Alto, PA, with Pastor David L. Deatrich and the Rev. Dr. Lynn D. Trutt officiating. Burial will follow in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg, PA.
It was her request to have no public viewing, but the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 P.M., Monday evening in the Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 South Broad Street, Waynesboro. PA.
